卡特提到他童年：母亲曾经会弹一手好钢琴，不幸遭遇意外受了脑损伤失去了这能力。父亲怕如果让孩子学琴会让母亲太难过，所以一直不允许。这也影响到了卡特和他父亲之间的关系。

Even as a child I wanted to learn to play the piano, be in a band and write music. I only ever wanted to play music and write music, not particularly perform it. 

Unfortunately my father wouldnt allow me to have a piano. I was never allowed, and I didn't touch music until I was nineteen years old. My mother played the piano but had had an accident which resulted in brain damage, and my father thought it would be too frustrating for her to be around somebody thumping away on the piano when she had been able to play exquisitely well herself, but now couldn't play anymore. 

This was a source of great resentment for me with my Dad, we did sort it all out by the time he died, however I was very frustrated by that.
